In December of 1891 James Naismith, a Canadian-American
Physical education teacher, invented the game of basketball. He invented the
game in order to provide an indoor sport to help athletes keep in shape during
the cold winter months. By 1904 the game had become so popular that it served
as a demonstration sport at the Summer Olympics. Becoming an official sport at
the Summer Olympics in 1936.
